Spider Veins, or telangiectasias, are those tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on thighs and lower legs. They can be hereditary and also can be caused form external factors, such as smoking and inactivity.
Varicose Veins are larger. They can appear raised with a bluish color and can become quite painful. Although spider veins and varicose veins carry blood, they are not part of the venous valve system.

Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an injection method used to treat unwanted veins. One of several kinds of a sclerosing solution is injected with a very fine needle directly into the vein. This procedure has been used for spider veins since the 1930’s and before that for larger veins. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell, stick together and the blood to thicken. Over a period of weeks, the vessel turns into scar tissue that is absorbed, eventually becoming barely noticeable or invisible.
